Fox & Friends Sunday repeatedly touted the “thousands” that attended a tax cut rally where Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) spoke, going so far as to make the rally’s supposedly large turnout one of their top headlines today.

Yet according to Fox’s local affiliate, reporting from St. Paul, Minnesota, it was the rally’s lowturnout that made it newsworthy. In an article titled “Hundreds Attend Anti-Tax Hike Rally At Capitol: Turnout Significantly Smaller Than Last Year’s,” Fox 9 News reported:
Hundreds gathered at the Minnesota Capitol to rally against a possible tax hike, but though it attracted the attention of some prominent lawmakers, the turnout didn’t meet expectations.[...]Organizers said that about 6,000 people turned out for last year’s event, but this year the headcount may have only touched 1,000.
Politico also noted the rally’s “sparse attendance” and highlighted the comments of a conservative blogger:
The [Tax Day] rally’s sparse attendance is attracting nearly as much attention as Bachmann’s remarks.Will Folks, a widely read blogger in South Carolina political circles, termed the rally a “dud” in a post Monday afternoon.“Politicians, political operatives and members of the media came close to outnumbering attendees at a much-hyped Columbia, S.C., tea party rally starring U.S. Rep. Thousands of protesters angry over a visit by Pope Benedict XVI for a lavish youth festival took to Madrid’s streets Wednesday, and were confronted by Catholic pilgrims who sang “hallelujah” and sat on the ground and prayed.
No serious incidents were reported as dozens of riot police kept the two groups apart in and around the central Puerta del Sol square.
“God yes, Church no!” was one of the slogans chanted by the protesters as they marched across central Madrid on the eve of the 84-year-old pope’s arrival in the Spanish capital for the rock-festival style World Youth Day celebrations.
More than 100 groups took part, uniting many causes, including those seeking a change in the Church’s attitude to gay rights and those fighting for a clearer separation of Church and state.
But the outcry that has struck a chord with many — including some priests — is over the official 50.5-million-euro ($73-million) price tag, excluding the cost of police and security, of the Madrid celebrations.
The protest groups, some of which argue the real cost of the event to taxpayers is more than 100 million euros, are joining under the slogan: “The pope’s visit, not with my taxes.”
Organisers say most of the cost will be covered by a registration fee from the assembled pilgrims, and the celebration will be a massive tourist boost for Spain.
But for many the celebrations are jarring at a time when the economy is faltering, the government is making painful cuts and the unemployment rate stands at 20.89 percent. For those under 25, the jobless figure is over 45 percent.
“We criticise this scandalous show at a time of such a terribly distressing economic situation, with entire families unemployed,” said Evaristo Villar, of Redes Cristianos (Christian Networks).
“This ostentation is causing a lot of damage and distancing a lot of people” from the Church, he said.
Many of those in Spain’s 15-M “indignant” movement — launched on May 15 against the management of the economic crisis — were also taking part in the protest.
One huge placard at the march displayed a picture of the pope next to that of Stephane Hessel, the writer who inspired the “indignant” movement, with the words “Clash of the Titans”.
Another banner said: “We demand a real secular state, freedom of conscience is a right.”
Among the protesters was one man dressed as the pope in a fake “Popemobile”, a devil’s head next to him.
Hundreds of pilgrims in the yellow WYD T-shirts and sunhats were gathered in the Puerta del Sol square when the marchers reached the site.
They sang “halleluyah” and shouted “Long Live the Pope” and “Benedicto” at the demonstrators, who responded with cries of “Nazis!” and “Pedophiles, watch out children!”
Some of the pilgrims knelt on the ground and prayed.
One of the protesters, Ignacio, 18, was bleeding from the nose.
“I was at the protest with my father, and one of the Catholics punched me in the face,” he said.
One Roman Catholic group called Hazte Oir (Make Yourself Heard), called on the authorities to ban the protest march, with a petition describing it as “an expression of intolerance and religious hatred”.
Spanish gays and lesbians say they will hold a separate protest “kiss-in” after the pope’s arrival Thursday, in protest against the Church’s attitude to homosexuality.
For the August 16-21 Catholic celebrations, traffic is banned from much of central Madrid and a huge white stage has been erected for events in the emblematic Cibeles Square.
Huge speakers were blaring out pop music throughout the day as hundreds of thousands of faithful fans in floppy hats sweltered in the August heat.
The Roman Catholic Church has opened 200 white confessionals in the form of boat sails along the main thoroughfare through Madrid’s Retiro park.
The pope will hold a “Prayer Vigil” on Saturday evening at an airbase southwest of the capital, where the pilgrims will spend the night on an esplanade the size of 48 football pitches.
He will celebrate mass there on Sunday morning at a white altar almost 200 metres (660 feet) long in front of a wave-shaped stage and under a giant parasol “tree”, made of interwoven golden rods.
A 24-year-old Mexican chemistry student accused of plotting a gas attack on protesters against the pope will appear in court Thursday, a legal official said. He was one of about 30,000 volunteers helping in the World Youth Day celebrations.

Tired of Afghanistan and all those messy, oil-ish wars in the Greater Middle East that just don’t seem to pan out? Count on one thing: part of the U.S. military feels just the way you do, especially a largely sidelined Navy — and that’s undoubtedly one of the reasons why, a few months back, the specter of China as this country’s future enemy once again reared its ugly head.
Back before 9/11, China was, of course, the favored future uber-enemy of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and all those neocons who signed onto the Project for the New American Century and later staffed George W. atlantic international partnership, atlantic international partnership madrid, economy newsBush’s administration. After all, if you wanted to build a military beyond compare to enforce a long-term Pax Americana on the planet, you needed a nightmare enemy large enough to justify all the advanced weapons systems in which you planned to invest.
As late as June 2005, neocon journalist Robert Kaplan was still writing in the Atlantic about “How We Would Fight China,” an article with this provocative subhead: “The Middle East is just a blip. The American military contest with China in the Pacific will define the twenty-first century. And China will be a more formidable adversary than Russia ever was.” As everyone knows, however, that “blip” proved far too much for the Bush administration.
Finding itself hopelessly bogged down in two ground wars with rag-tag insurgency movements on either end of the Greater Middle Eastern “mainland,” it let China-as-Monster-Enemy slip beneath the waves. In the process, the Navy and, to some extent, the Air Force became adjunct services to the Army (and the Marines). In Iraq and Afghanistan, for instance, U.S. Navy personnel far from any body of water found themselves driving trucks and staffing prisons.
It was the worst of times for the admirals, and probably not so great for the flyboys either, particularly after Secretary of Defense Robert Gates began pushing pilotless drones as the true force of the future. Naturally, a no-dogfight world in which the U.S. military eternally engages enemies without significant air forces is a problematic basis for proposing future Air Force budgets.
There’s no reason to be surprised then that, as the war in Iraq began to wind down in 2009-2010, the “Chinese naval threat” began to quietly reemerge. China was, after all, immensely economically successful and beginning to flex its muscles in local territorial waters. The alarms sounded by military types or pundits associated with them grew stronger in the early months of 2011 (as did news of weapons systems being developed to deal with future Chinese air and sea power). “Beware America, time is running out!” warned retired Air Force lieutenant general and Fox News contributor Thomas G. McInerney while describing China’s first experimental stealth jet fighter.
Others focused on China’s “string of pearls”: a potential set of military bases in the Indian Ocean that might someday (particularly if you have a vivid imagination) give that country control of the oil lanes. Meanwhile, Kaplan, whose book about rivalries in that ocean came out in 2010, was back in the saddle, warning: “Now the United States faces a new challenge and potential threat from a rising China which seeks eventually to push the U.S. military’s area of operations back to Hawaii and exercise hegemony over the world’s most rapidly growing economies.” (Head of the U.S. Pacific Command Admiral Robert Willard claimed that China had actually taken things down a notch at sea in the early months of 2011 — but only thanks to American strength.)
